Shibas at Waukesha

There are only two certainties about the Waukesha shows, rather severe weather and lots of shiba people! This year was no exception: Loretta, George and Evelyn from MN are always there, all the usual Wisconsin folks, and, of course, me!

The judge on Saturday late in the afternoon was Randy Garren, the other half of the team that presented the great poodle Treson. No one around here had shown to him before. My impressions were that he was very much looking for good toplines and movement. He also checked for dentition and was patient with wiggly shibas on the table. He did what he wanted to do (which unfortunately in the case of Lilly was NOT the plan, see below), and that's about all you can ask for.

A very nekkid Toby was WD, I showed Lilly (Yankii's Lady Luck) to try and hold a major that was rapidly disappearing (as Solo was at the E.R. vet the night before, we sent our wishes for a full and complete recovery from whatever she has). What had to happen was for the winners bitch to go BOS over the specials bitch and that was the only way a major could be had and be shared with WD. Well, Lilly wasn't supposed to win, but she did. In a way, it was fortunate that my 12-18 client bitch went RWB because then I could just slap myself :) However, Lilly did not go BOS and Toby didn't go BW anyway so our effort while valiant was unsuccessful. Sometimes the best laid plans...

Mickey came out in one of two ring appearances this month to take the breed over a nice group of specials and while he showed very well in the group despite the heat, he was not pulled. However, I think the people outside the ring liked him because a lot of them were feeding him from the club hospitality table outside the group ring. Amazing what a shiba smile and a tail wag will get you... Autumn, shown by Rosie VanLaanen (ltns Rosie!) was Best of Opposite Sex.

The following day we were on EARLY and with heat indices of 105+, that was a welcome switch for us (but I think we can probably blame Yori LOL because I think she asks for early judging when she shows). Yori took WD with her BBE dog, whose name escapes me, but maybe Yori can send me an email about it. A nice little bitch from Bill Leary's breeding shown by a junior handler was WB (major for sure broken today with 2 bitches absent). Travis was Best of Breed and Autumn was Best of Opposite Sex. Judge was Dawn Vick Hansen who also checked for dentition. She is another one who has a sense of humor in the ring with wiggle worm shibas. It was the first outdoor weekend for many of us around here and I think sometimes it takes the dogs a little time to figure out it's a real dog show.

On the juniors front, Judy S's niece was first in her junior handling class. If anyone can fill in names or details for me, feel free, I think my brain was pretty fried as I brought the camera to the show, but forgot to put it into my bag, duh! So I never got any pictures. Please feel free to send shots of any of the dogs that I have mentioned and I will try to get them in :)

Toby does us proud in Canada!

Toby (Storm Kloud's It's All About me is a Canadian champion!!  He
was undefeated in the breed (he did have 2 bitches for competition!!).  He got 2 puppy BIS, the only puppy to do that that weekend, he also placed in the regular
groups  with a GR1,2,3,&4.  and he won the puppy group 4 out of the 6 shows. Picture to come soon!

Shibas at Belvidere

We showed to Beverly Capstick at Kishwaukee KC today. Personally ... I thought she was a great judge LOL. Seriously, she was very nice lady, made a few jokes about the heat and in general, was pleasant to exhibitors and dogs alike. I'm not entirely sure what she was looking for, but she sure moved us around a lot. The one thing I know that the winners had in common was that they both moved nicely on a loose lead and both showed pretty well. BOB,BW,WD (no specials today) was my Jimmy to finish his championship, so he's now Ch. Hi-Jinx Phantom Phlyer (guess I'd better check his points on AKC, but generally I can count to 15).

WB to finish her championship also was Lilly (new Ch. Yankii's Lady Luck), owned by Joy Burlingame & Lisa Duncan and handled by moi. She is Mickey's 21st champion offspring, woohoo! RWD was Yori's puppy from BBE, he is a half-brother to Jimmy out of the same sire and RWB was Karen Drentlaw's Piku (I THINK that's her name, I am sure Karen will correct me if I'm wrong) also from BBE, I think she gave Lilly a run for her money, and I'm very happy to have Lilly done.

Making his debut today is Jane Chapin's Johnny who I have a picture of also, J-Ann's Johnny Jump Up.

Book Review

Shiba Inu Champions 1993-2001 appeared in my mailbox this week. It really was interesting to go through — ALL CHAMPIONS and their sires and dams in the breed for the time period are listed in these books. This I was expecting, what I was not expecting were the many beautiful color photos and the interesting articles that were also included. This is a excellent reference for any shiba inu owner.

Some of the articles include: The AKC Breed Standard, Choosing the Right Breed for You, History and Tradition of the Japanese Shiba-Inu, A list of Rescue Contacts, A feature on Ch. Frerose Otomi, The Novice's Guide to Conformation Shows, Shibas Carting in So. Africa,  The Shiba Inu and Children, Several poems written by shiba people, Working Shibas are Winning Companions, The Aging Shiba, a feature on O'Date Shibas and several articles by Fran Attridge, The Hunting Abilities of the Kishu and Shiba Dogs, Early Imports of the Shiba Inu in the USA and this is all before you get to over 100 pages of champion statistics. Most of the authors of these articles are familiar to me as the List Momma of Shiba-L, they are some of our regular contributors!

Shibas at Amboy

It was a small entry at Amboy as per the usual. One show by itself in the middle of nowhere :) Jimmy took his 12th point and unfortunately also BW over the single class bitch Hanako.

Mickey was Best of Breed. The exciting part is that he also took a Group First! His tenth :) I believe this gives him the group record outside of HI (don't worry Charlie, I think your record of 14 Group Firsts is safe from Mickey LOL) and possibly the oldest shiba to win a Group First. Please let me know if you've heard of someone older than 8 winning a group!
