Thanks to Debbie Schaefer and Tiger for this Pet Disaster Plan from the Village of Palatine's website in Illinois, I could not find this on their site anymore, so I am posting it here.

YOUR PET DISASTER PLAN

Disaster disrupts and affects everything in it’s path, including pets, livestock, and wildlife.  Pets need to be included in your household disaster plan since they depend on you for their safety and well-being.  It is important to consider and prepare for your pets before disaster strikes.  If you must evacuate, do not leave pets behind.  Consider the following preparedness measures:

Identification Information

Veterinarian records with current vaccinations
ID and registration tags fastened securely to collar
Have a secure carrier and leash
Keep a current photo of pet
Information sheet of pets name and behavior
Owners name and address

Pet Disaster Kit

Pet Food
Water
Medication
Litter Box
Can Opener
Food Dishes
Trash Bags
Baggies
First Aid Kit
Blankets

Shelter Plans

With the exception of service animals, pets are not allowed in emergency shelters
Check local hotels, motels, kennels, boarding facilities, animal shelters, friends, relatives to help provide care and shelter.
Does your Neighborhood Watch program have a list of neighbors who could help care for pets.

Post Disaster Information

Remember most animals are disoriented and displaced too.
Be cautious approaching wild animals during emergency situations

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on the site on a daily basis to meet their quota for receiving free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free!  It's a purple rectangle under the picture of the day, so to speak.  Today it's a black lab.  This doesn't cost you a thing!

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for the advertising.

I went to the site and found it interesting.

Here's the web site!  Pass it along to people you know. Thanks.

This was discussed on the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy board. I also checked snopes.com just to be sure and it appears to be true.

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine".

It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution -- check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens. Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate -- especially dark or baker's chocolate -- which is toxic to dogs. Cacao bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

New Webmag Feature

Questions from people perusing the website. I will attempt to answer them as best I can, and as they "age off" the Shibawebmag, I will post them in their own section in the archives. Please make sure if you have a question to do a search and make sure the answer isn't somewhere on the site.

Question #1: What are "hot spots?"

Answer: Also known as Summer Sores or Moist Eczema, Hot Spots can seemingly appear spontaneously anywhere on a dog's body and the area involved can rapidly spread.  This moist, raw skin disorder has a variety of causes but the most consistent factor is bacteria.  Anything that irritates or breaks the skin can create the environment for bacterial contamination if the skin surface has just a bit of moisture on it. It also quite often occurs when the dog has been bitten by a flea.

What can you do to take care of it? If it is very minor, I like to use Gold Bond Medicated Powder. If it is more severe or is not significantly better in less than 24 hours, it is probably best to cut the hair away from it, retreat and possibly take your dog to the vet in the event that the hot spot has progressed to a bacterial infection and might require further treatment as well as antibiotics.

I didn't go but heard from Pat Doescher about the winners, she was also going to send me pictures, but forgot her camera (see, I'm not the only forgetful one!).

BOB was Tammy Szabo's Toby
BW,WD was Pat Doescher's Chip
WB was Monica Flynn and Yori Green's Kiku

I think there was a total of 2 points for Chip and Kiku. The judge was Beverly Lehnig.

New Shiba Book

There is a new shiba book I saw listed on Ebay and made a bid of $50.00 for it because I could not find it anywhere online in the U.S. ... well fortunately I was outbid because someone contacted me and showed me where I could buy it on the Amazon U.K. site for MUCH less (Thank you Lisa!). I'm figuring it was less than $25.00 including shipping.
