Shiba Breed Description

General appearance: small, moderately-built dog with pointed ears and a curled or sickle tail. Often has prominent, rounded cheeks and a foxy appearance.
Temperament: Some Shibas are friendly and outgoing, some very reserved. May be dog-aggressive, but not aggressive toward people. Many Shibas dislike being restrained, and will struggle and scream during nail trimming and bathing. (This is typical for the breed and DOES NOT indicate a problem temperament!)
Size: usually between 13-17 inches at the shoulder, average weight 16-25 lbs.
Coat: medium-short plush double coat, about 1-2 inches long.
Color:
Red: ranging from fawn to bright orange to a brownish shade. Sometimes overlaid with black, or showing a black saddle pattern. Usually has distinctive white markings on cheeks, front side of neck, forechest, inside of legs, underbelly, and on tail. May have white socks.
Black and tan: usually has mask-like markings on face with white cheeks, white or tan spots over eyes, often a white bowtie on the forechest, tan and/or white on lower legs and feet. White on tail. May have red showing through black on head.
Cream: white to cream, often with buff or pale red markings on ears and topline.
Red Sesame: Occasionally a dark, wolfy gray-brown color, usually with buff or cream markings on cheeks, front, underside and tail.
